After the reigns of Jannaeus and his widow, Alexandra (76–67 B.C.), the Hasmonean dynasty came to a close with the intrigues and fighting of two sons. In the year 65 there was such a struggle for power between Aristobulus II and Hyrcanus II that the latter requested Rome to intervene.
